As McClain Hermes, a GOC sophomore, leaves for Rio de Janeiro today, she is filled with excitement to compete against the best in the world in for the Paralympics.  McClain is legally blind — as she explains here –, she has a tiny amount of vision in her left eye only because of retinal detachment. That vision is shrinking. Still, she swims, and swims well enough to qualify to swim three events at the upcoming Paralympics in Brazil.

And here’s a cool fact to know: Not only is McClain the youngest member of the USA Paralympic team, she is also the youngest member of the USA Team at the summer games.  The youngest member of the USA Olympic team is 16.

Fox 5 reports on her story:  Legally blind swimmer races her way to Paralympics in Rio

We need to show McClain lots of support from her GOC family! If you are interested in sending any good luck notes or messages to McClain, you may either email them to Jamie Martin | Assoc. Dir., Swimming National Team Programs or mail them to:

Swimming Schedule for Rio

McClain’s mom shared the following schedule for McClain’s competitions:

  • Sunday, September 11 100 Breaststroke PRELIMS – 9:30 a.m. – 11:50 a.m.
(Not sure if she will make finals in this events since it is combined S12 and S13 swimmers)
  • Monday, September 12 400 M Freestyle PRELIMS – 9:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
(Again, this is a combined S12 and S13 events so we are not sure she will make finals in this event either. She’s 5th in the world for just S12 though.)
  • Wednesday, September 14 100 Back PRELIMS – 9:30 a.m. –  12:05 p.m.
(Based upon World Rankings, she should final in this event!)
  • Wednesday, September 14 100 Back FINALS – 5:30 p.m. – 9:25 p.m.

NBC will be releasing the Paralympic broadcast schedule this week. The complete details will be posted here  as soon as they are available. There will also be live streams available to watch.
